Steam Chasing vs. Originating: Building a Long-Term market strategy

The Ecosystem of Sports Analytics
In the quantitative sports landscape, there are two types of participants: Originators and Steam Chasers. Understanding the difference positionween the two is vital for anyone using positive EV sports analytics software.
The Originators
Originators are the architects of the market. These are the elite quantitative syndicates, data scientists, and algorithmic modelers. They build proprietary probability models from scratch.
When market makers release opening lines, the Originators compare those lines against their own deeply researched projections. When they find a discrepancy, they immediately execute massive positions. Their capital is what forces the oddsmakers to adjust the lines in the first place. Originators don't follow the market; they are the market.
The Steam Chasers
Steam Chasers (often referred to as top-down positiontors) do not use predictive models to determine the true probability of a game. Instead, they operate on a very simple premise: the sharpest offshore market makers (like Pinnacle or Circa) are the most accurate representation of truth.
When an Originator hits an offshore book and causes the line to "steam" (move rapidly), the Steam Chaser uses automated software to quickly find slower, recreational market makers that haven't updated their odds yet. They allocate to the "stale" number before it moves, effectively copying the homework of the Originators.
The EdgeSlate Approach
While steam chasing can be profitable, it is highly stressful, requires massive screen time, and often leads to getting banned by recreational market makers for picking off stale lines. Furthermore, steam chasers are highly susceptible to falling for "fake steam" traps set by Originators.
EdgeSlate is built on origination. We don't just alert you when a line moves; our dual-model architecture generates its own independent projections. By combining bottom-up fundamental modeling with top-down market tracking, our sports data analytics platform allows you to identify true value before the market moves, giving you the peace of mind that comes with knowing why a position holds expected value.
